Before the silver goal method was introduced into the game, which used a period of fifteen minutes to break a tie, the golden goal method is one of the historically significant methods that have been used to break the tie throughout the entire game of football. The golden goal methods a type of sudden death match in which the team that scored the first goal through the end of a tied game, through overtime like situation, was the declared winner of the game. The other team that was taking part in the game was declared the losing team and lost their place within the tournament or the match.

Why was the golden goal method stopped throughout the game of football? There are various reasons that this method of declaring a winner was changed. For one, the method put a lot of pressure on the referee to navigate the game and therefore the referee had been given a hard time by the players, the coaches and even the fans. The second reason that this was stopped is that players were beginning to become too aggressive while playing and losing the focus on the offense portion of the game. With the introduction of the silver goal method, players would again have to focus on the offense portion of the game.

The period of time that the teams were given through this type of sudden death match was a thirty minute period of time. This period of time was divided into two periods of fifteen minutes with a small half time in between. For the ten players on the team, this would equal one very long game. At the end of the additional thirty minutes, in the case that no goals have been scored, a shootout would occur through the game to determine a winner and finalize the score.
